Concrete tool workers have begun working on a major civil engineering project, building a road bridge over the River Clyde in Scotland.

Carrying the M74, the Auchenshuggle Bridge is being constructed using the largest mobile crane in Europe.

Transport minister Stewart Stevenson commented that the fact such a significant piece of equipment was required to build the feature showed that it was a complex operation.

Mr Stevenson said that the development of the M74 was one of the largest building projects in the nation and one that has provided jobs and investment for the construction sector.

"[The venture] reinforces our commitment to doing everything in our power to face head-on the challenges in consolidating economic recovery while supporting sustainable economic growth,” the minister stated.

News of this investment follows the release of the latest Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply and Markit Purchasing Managers' Index, which showed that the construction industry was showing signs of recovery.
