Research from Yorkshire Bank and Clydesdale Bank shows more than a quarter (26 per cent) of disastrous DIYers wish they had called a qualified tradesman in the first place.
One in ten have had to shell out as much as £500 to have their work put right after something went wrong.
But whether building a barbecue or a kitchen extension, having good-quality bricklaying tools and a positive attitude could be the first step towards renewed success.
Anna-Marie Desouza, editor of Build It, urges householders not to give up hope, but to try again where home improvements are concerned.
"The best advice I can give to people is, don't be put off - just be prepared," she says.
"Get some advice and read up about the task before commencing."
