Having the right bricklaying tools could bring back the confidence of Britons whose previous DIY exploits have left them reluctant to try again.

Research from Yorkshire Bank and Clydesdale Bank shows more than a quarter (26 per cent) of disastrous DIYers wish they had called a qualified tradesman in the first place.

One in ten have had to shell out as much as £500 to have their work put right after something went wrong.

But whether building a barbecue or a kitchen extension, having good-quality bricklaying tools and a positive attitude could be the first step towards renewed success.

Anna-Marie Desouza, editor of Build It, urges householders not to give up hope, but to try again where home improvements are concerned.

"The best advice I can give to people is, don't be put off - just be prepared," she says.

"Get some advice and read up about the task before commencing."
