Tim Doherty, managing director of the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, suggests that there are two different ways to save money on home improvement projects.
The first is to take bricklaying tools in hand and undertake both any demolition work required and the subsequent installation of new units and appliances.
In this way, he estimates homeowners could save between £2,000 and £3,000 by removing the need to hire tradesmen to do the work for them.
However, he concedes that not everybody may be prepared for the plumbing and wiring work, along with the carpentry that fitting a kitchen may involve.
But those who remove existing fixtures and then have the professionals in to install their replacements may still be able to cut around £300 off of the labour charges involved.
