Paying a slight premium for bricklaying tools could be a good idea, construction professionals have been told.

According to DiyAdvice.com, a bricklayer should be prepared to invest in high-quality equipment, such as floats and trowels.

This, it said, is because cheap tools tend to bend easily, do not work as well, are prone to breaking and are far less comfortable to use.

By contrast, top-of-the-range bricklaying tools are long-lasting and durable items that should withstand regular usage and produce good results.

"When you buy cheap tools, you risk having to take a trip to the hardware store to replace a broken tool right in the middle of your project," DiyAdvice.com said.

The website advised builders to consider any bricklaying tools they purchase as an investment for any future building tasks.

This echoes the advice given by BricklayingBasics, which said buying a "ridiculously cheap" brick trowel could be a false economy.
