Masonry is often painted either for decorative reasons or to ensure it is waterproof, but first it must be swept clean.
A proper masonry brush could be required as these have been specially designed to cope with tough materials such as brick cleaning acid.
According to DIY Doctor, acid may need to be used on "really stubborn areas of old cement" or areas of existing and flaking paint.
This means specialist bricklaying tools such as a long arm acid brush may prove useful.
Meanwhile, an expert has advised that a masonry brush may also be required to get rid of unsightly crystals that build up over time.
Kathryn Hatter, a writer at eHow, said this is because it can handle muriatic acid, a cleaning chemical that helps to restore masonry to its previous condition.
