A surge in construction activity, which should see items such as bricklaying tools and concrete finishing tools being deployed, has been hailed by a government frontbencher.

Leigh in Greater Manchester is one of a number of places that is set to benefit from the creation of new council houses.

Local MP and health secretary Andy Burnham has been among those to welcome this development, as 35 new council houses will be created in the town.

He said the funding for council houses demonstrates the government's commitment to the area.

"In particular, I welcome the fact that many of the homes will be for local families," he commented.

Mr Burnham added that this is likely to be equally good news for the construction industry, as it will lead to new jobs and apprenticeships being created.

This, he said, would help the economy in Leigh "through these difficult times".

The government this week diverted an extra £122.6 million to building extra council houses across the UK.
