According to London Mayor Boris Johnson, the city is on target to receive 50,000 new affordable homes by 2012.
More than 20,000 properties have already been delivered, in spite of the economic downturn over the last year.
However, Mr Johnson said he wants this level of momentum to be maintained over the next few years.
"There is a huge need for affordable housing that we simply must meet," Mr Johnson said.
The Mayor confirmed that work is already underway to identify and fund new affordable housing developments in London.
He added that continuing to build new properties would enable the city to retain its position as one of the best places in which to live and work.
This comes shortly after Mr Johnson asked authorities in London to carry out an audit of potential development sites.
